Meet Yue Lao, the Chinese God of Matchmaking

Meet Yue Lao, the Chinese God of Matchmaking

In Chinese tradition, love has a matchmaker: a silver-haired elder who works beneath the moon. His name is Yue Lao (月老), and the red thread he carries has become one of the most recognisable symbols of romantic connection in Chinese folklore.

Our Love Oracle takes creative inspiration from this figure. To understand the thread woven through our artwork, begin with the person who holds it.

Who is Yue Lao?

Yue Lao is a deity of marriage and matchmaking in Chinese folk and Daoist traditions. His longer name, Yue Xia Lao Ren (月下老人), means “the Old Man under the Moon.” In traditional accounts, he consults a register of marriages and joins people with red cords.

For readers meeting him for the first time, “the Chinese god of matchmaking” is a useful introduction. His particular role is bringing people together in marriage, rather than representing every aspect of love.

The old man beneath the moon

A well-known legend follows a traveller named Wei Gu. One night, he encounters an elderly man reading a mysterious book by moonlight, with a bag beside him. When Wei Gu asks about it, the elder explains that the bag contains red cords used to connect future marriage partners.

The elder tells Wei Gu whom he will marry. Wei Gu rejects the prediction and tries to prevent it, with cruel consequences for the girl identified as his future wife. Years later, he marries a woman and discovers that she is the same person. The meeting beneath the moon is remembered as an encounter with the divine matchmaker.

This is a shortened retelling of the traditional story of Wei Gu, associated with the Tang-dynasty writer Li Fuyan. The old tale contains violence as well as romance; its central theme is the limits of a person’s attempts to control fate.

What does the red thread mean?

In the traditional account, Yue Lao’s cords connect the feet of people destined to marry, even when circumstances keep them apart. The red thread belongs to his role as matchmaker: it is a visible symbol of an otherwise unseen bond.

In our creative interpretation, the thread also invites a question: what kind of connection do you want to nurture? It might bring to mind a conversation you have postponed, the comfort of being understood, or the difference between holding on and holding someone with care.

A living tradition

Yue Lao is more than a character in an old story. At temples such as Taipei’s Longshan Temple, visitors continue to honour him and bring hopes about relationships and marriage. Temple customs vary, and a website oracle is not a substitute for those religious practices.

How Yue Lao inspired our Love Oracle

The Time Energy’s Love Oracle is an original collection of 60 illustrated cards and messages inspired by Yue Lao and the imagery of the red thread. The card texts are our contemporary creations, not ancient verses handed down from a temple or translations of traditional fortune slips.

The moon, the thread and the moments of meeting in our artwork create a setting for reflection. Each card offers a different perspective on connection: belonging, patience, longing, boundaries, change, or the courage to begin again.

Drawing a card does not establish that a particular person is your destined partner, reveal another person’s private feelings, or determine what you must do. Let the message open a question, then bring your own experience and judgement to the answer.

Carry the story into your own reflection

You do not need to know Chinese mythology before you draw. Simply hold a person or a question of the heart in mind, and notice what the message brings into focus.

Ask yourself: Where do I feel at ease? What am I hoping for? What would care, honesty or self-respect look like in my next step? A meaningful connection still leaves room for mutual choice.
