The Chinese zodiac year used in BaZi begins at Lichun (立春), the first of the twenty-four solar terms. In 2027 that is 4 February. Chinese New Year 2027 falls on 6 February. They are two different calendars answering two different questions, and for anyone born in late January or early February the difference changes their chart.
Chinese New Year is lunar. It is the second new moon after the winter solstice, which is why it wanders between 21 January and 20 February from year to year. It governs the festival, the holiday, the family calendar.
Lichun is solar. It is the moment the sun reaches 315° of ecliptic longitude, which is why it barely moves — 3, 4 or 5 February, every year. It governs the agricultural calendar, the solar terms, and the stem-branch system that BaZi, Zi Wei Dou Shu and Qi Men Dun Jia are all built on.
The annual Tai Sui (太歲) hands over at Lichun. So does the year pillar. The festival is not the hinge; the solar term is.
Consider someone born on 5 February 2027. By the lunar calendar they were born before Chinese New Year, so a zodiac-year chart would call them a Horse. By the solar calendar Lichun has passed, so their year pillar is 丁未 and they are a Goat.
That is not a label dispute. The year pillar carries a stem as well as a branch, and those two characters feed into the five-element balance of the whole chart. Call that person 丙午 when they are 丁未 and you have changed a Yang Fire on Fire into a Yin Fire on Earth. Every downstream reading — element balance, ten gods, luck cycle direction — moves with it.
Month pillars change at solar terms too, not on the first of the lunar month. The Tiger month 寅月 opens at Lichun and runs to Jingzhe (惊蛰) on 6 March 2027. Anyone born within a day or two of a solar term boundary needs the exact term time, not just the date, because the terms fall at a specific hour.
This is the most common error in free online chart calculators: they split the year at Chinese New Year, or split the month at the lunar month, and produce a chart that is wrong by one whole pillar for everyone born near a boundary.
Lichun 立春 — 4 February 2027. The year pillar changes to 丁未, the Tai Sui hands over to the Goat, and the Tiger month 寅月 begins.
Chinese New Year — 6 February 2027. The lunar new year and the Spring Festival.
Jingzhe 惊蛰 — 6 March 2027. The Tiger month ends and the Rabbit month 卯月 begins.
If you were born between 21 January and 6 February in any year, it is worth checking which pillar you actually have before reading anything else about your chart. The 2027 Goat year breakdown is here, and a Life Blueprint reading calculates the boundaries from the solar terms rather than the festival date.
